From resources to volunteer opportunities, the Women’s
Centre of Calgary is “every woman’s place for support, connection &
community.” The Women’s Centre is Calgary’s resource and
support centre for women. It is open to all women and there are no admission
criteria or costs for programs. Along with over 400 volunteers, the
Women’s Centre staff and users of the facility work towards building
good society. We understand that one day we may be asking for help and the
next day we might be giving it.
According to a study of 10,000 people sponsored by the Commonwealth
Foundation, a good society boils down to three components. The first area
relates to meeting basic needs; the second area involves association through
sharing within a community; and the third area includes participation
through public involvement in decision making, policy making and public
affairs.
Women’s Centre activities are grouped into three areas:
Basic Needs: We help women meet their basic needs through
referrals, emergency assistance, information, peer support, legal advice and
equipment use.
Association: Community is created through drop in social
integration, our volunteer program, use of our space by community groups,
scheduled workshops and programs, and our many community collaborations and
coordinated events.
Participation: Women’s participation is encouraged by
providing skill development on diversity issues and social action, working
in partnership with other groups to address women’s issues, and increasing
awareness of women’s issues and situations.
