Women In Need Society helps women to help themselves through
innovative & effective programs & services. Shop at a WINS Thrift Store
today! Women In Need Society (WINS) is a
not-for-profit organization in Calgary. WINS’ mission is to
help women help themselves through innovative and effective programs and
services. WINS works with women in low-income situations. This
includes women coming out of shelters, single mothers and their children,
women in transition, and new Canadians.
Rowshon and her family first started coming to the WINS Family
Resource Centre a year after moving to Canada. Five years later,
Rowshon’s entire family has benefited from the services of the centre. Two
of her children participated in learning English and basic literacy and
social skills. Rowshon herself comes to the centre for parenting and
computer classes, and to gain information about resources in the community.
The staff in the WINS Family Resource Centre encouraged
Rowshon to return to school. She has now successfully completed her nursing
assistant certificate and is working in the field. Her children are thriving
in school and things are going well for the family as a whole.
Rowshon’s story is only one small example of the many women who WINS
helps to gain the resources, knowledge, skills and confidence needed to
achieve self-sufficiency. The revenue generated by WINS thrift stores
is used to fund a portion of each of the community programs run by
WINS - including their Family Resource Centre that
women like Rowshon have been accessing to enhance their skills and their
lives.
