While mosquitoes are a normal part of summer life here in Canada, in other
parts of the world they pose a tremendous threat to the lives of millions of
children. Every 30 seconds, one child in Africa dies of malaria, a disease
is transmitted by the Anopholes night-biting mosquito. Malaria is the cause
of an estimated 20 per cent of all child deaths in Africa.
During a 2005 trip to Africa, Belinda Stronach and Rick Mercer saw
first-hand the effects of malaria and were amazed to learn that people could
be protected from the disease by sleeping under a long-lasting,
insecticide-treated bed net. They launched Spread the Net, an initiative
that partners with UNICEF Canada to raise funds for bed nets for
distribution through UNICEF programmes in Liberia and Rwanda.
Already Spread the Net has raised enough funds in Canada for a first
shipment of 42,500 bed nets. Doing your part to help protect children from
malaria is simple - each $10 donation buys one bed net that can protect a
child for up to five years.
UNICEF is a global leader in protecting children from malaria and the
world’s largest procurer of insecticide-treated bed nets, which are the most
effective and efficient means of protecting children from malaria. UNICEF
also had a key role in the development of the first long-lasting
insecticide-treated bed net. One Net. $10. Save Lives. Make your
