RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

Shouldn’t Birth Control pills also be considered a menace to our environment?

Birth Control pills are currently used by more than 100 million women worldwide and by almost 12 million women in the US. The substances in the pill may be altered a little by the body, but for the main part, they still pass through the bloodstream and eventually into the urine. Urine ends up in our water supplies and eventually back into our drinking water. Hormone replacement therapy employs similar hormones, and these also get into the water supply -- so your question is relating to the underlying impact of these hormones.

Although much of the synthetic hormonal material is still present (but very diluted) it is hard to pin down the effects. However this issue is very much beginning to cause concern for a number of reasons. Organizations have drawn attention to other possible risks associated with these substances in the water supply, including the increased incidence of breast cancer (in both men and women), the increased incidence of testicular cancer in young men, and the increasingly early onset of puberty in young girls. We could also discuss the fertility challenges. Could there be relations to hormones in the water and women having fertility issues? US statistics suggest that 6,000,000 women are dealing with infertility and 2,000,000 married couples are infertile. Although serious issues, it takes time to fully investigate any changes and even longer to establish the role of hormones in water.

We already have the knowledge of how to prevent pregnancy, yet is it convenience or laziness that promotes the idea of just “taking the Pill”. I understand some of the other options for birth control are not as easy or favorable, but perhaps it is time we as women examine our choices and the possible repercussions. Until we have much more research evidence, we can only suspect what these hormones are responsible for. It may be that we have to introduce far more effective water-treatment techniques to help prevent potential problems. Perhaps it would be better to take action before we fully understand the risks in order to divert a potential disaster. Of course, oral contraceptives are the most widely used pharmaceuticals on earth, but what about antibiotics and anti-depressants?

With water being our next commodity, how are we as a society protecting one of our most important resources and necessaries of life? Will we trade the convenience of synthetic hormonal replacement and birth control to risk the health of our planet and people? It is time for a paradigm shift on our awareness of the influence we have on our environment!
