RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

Why is your gut called your second brain?

When you have a “gut reaction” or a “gut feeling” it is really coming from your chakra (energy centres) right around your belly button, which is also called your “solar plexus”. This is your body’s way of telling whether what you are experiencing is good for you or right for you. Although this is how your gut can give you information, there is more to it than just your chakras. The gut itself is influenced by accessory organs and glands which actually aid with digestion and elimination. There are also receptor sites in the gut for the neurotransmitters that your body produces. These sites can be blocked or inflamed by poor digestion and improper elimination.

The Chinese 5-Element system exemplifies this, yet you will not find the “brain” itself listed as one of the 5-elements, but rather you will see that the brain is “fed” by certain organs or peripheral organs. The brain is assumed, as it were, because it is directly connected to the Governing Meridian and the Central Meridian. Though these are not listed as part of the 5-element system either, these two meridians are affected by the 5-element system particularly by the Fire Element.

The Fire Element contains the following organs: small intestine, peripheral circulation (called Circulation/Sex), triple warmer and heart. Your “gut” consists of the main organs including the large intestine, small intestine, and accessory organs such as the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, stomach and spleen.

The small intestine does the assimilating of the food, and it provides the nourishment for your brain. Circulation/Sex provides the circulation of nutrients and reproductive hormones to the brain. The triple warmer meridian contains the thyroid, adrenals and other endocrine glands. The thyroid controls how fast you digest, assimilate and eliminate, as well as how fast you burn your oxygen and how fast your thoughts are flying through your head (or how fast your neurotransmitters are being used up). The heart helps you to pump all that oxygen to your brain so you can actually have energy and a clear head.

The bottom line is “brain” function is really the “gut” and glands working together so your brain can actually think clearly and integrate and interpret your emotions accurately in order to correspond with the event or person you are involved with at the moment.
