RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

What are your best tips for getting the most out of my skin care products?

When applying tonic, lotion or cream, it is best to apply in an upward sweeping motion. Skin cells are like shingles on a roof - they form one on top of the other in a downward direction to protect the skin. Therefore, it is important to apply products in an upward motion to maximize absorption.

Many clients ask if they can skip the toner or tonic in the products they use. Non-drying tonics help the skin absorb and retain nutrients in a more effective manner and are an extremely important step to having healthy and hydrated skin. The more mature the skin, the more important it is to utilize the benefits of a tonic.

Using a non-drying tonic prior to moisturizing provides the base of hydration that your creams and lotions need in order to be most effective. Applying a moisturizer on top of water can actually have a drying effect. Skin that lacks sufficient moisture will experience premature wrinkles, excessive oil and breakouts.

Tonic is a cost effective step as one typically needs less cream, lotion or serum following a tonic. I suggest pouring a small amount of tonic into the palm of your hand to apply it rather than absorbing the product into a cotton ball and then follow with moisturizer (with SPF protection for day).

Some clients are concerned about using a moisturizer when they have oily skin but there are many misconceptions when it comes to treating oily skin. It is true that some people have naturally oily skin. However, many people who think they have oily skin actually suffer from skin that is dehydrated. When the skin is dry, the sebaceous glands work hard to compensate for the dehydration and overproduce oil. The dryer the skin becomes, the more oil the skin produces; thus leading to breakouts and large pores.

So what is an easy method for knowing your skin type? Wash your face with warm water. If you can feel oil on your face after 15 minutes, you have oily skin. If you feel oil on your face after 30 minutes, you have normal skin. If your face produces oil after 45 minutes or more, you have dry skin. If you experience tightness immediately after washing, you either have dry or dehydrated skin or your cleanser is too harsh.
