ASK OUR EXPERTS...

How can I overcome fear and doubt that holds me back from greater success?

Our business reflects who we are. Fear and doubt in business is connected to fear and doubt about ourselves. Fear and doubt are connected to negative beliefs. Preventing fear and doubt from holding us back means lessening the hold negative beliefs have on us.

When have you said, “I’m not good at sales”, or “I’m not enough (not smart enough, capable enough, tenacious enough) to really be successful? These statements all represent stories we believe about ourselves.

These stories seem true because we find evidence to prove they are true. For example, if we believe we are not good at sales, every time we don’t close a sale, we criticize ourselves and reinforce this negative belief. Other sales get forgotten about and dismissed because they don’t match the negative belief. As we give attention, energy and focus to the negative belief, we find more evidence to support that it is true. Think of it as a negative, downward spiral that holds you back from success.

The exciting part is realizing you can change your story! If you want different results, choose a different story and find evidence that supports the new story. Think about a teeter-totter. At one end is your negative belief. On the other end is your positive belief. Over the years, you have found evidence that supports your negative belief, and you have pushed that end of the teeter-totter down. Choose to find evidence to support your positive belief and you will start to weigh down that end of the teeter-totter. Over time, your positive belief will be more heavily weighted and you will also discover that you are getting more of the positive results you want in your business!

Experiment with a story about being great at sales. Every day, as something positive happens in your sales process, remember this as evidence of your new belief. Notice it, tell others, journal about it. Over time, build more evidence to support your new belief than there is evidence supporting your negative belief.

Successes and struggles in business reflect success or struggle we feel in ourselves. Look at the beliefs you are paying attention to. If the beliefs are negative in any way, choose a new story and you will overcome the fear and doubt you are feeling!
