RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I want to renovate my kitchen and bathrooms, but I can’t afford to do everything at once. I have some ideas but I don’t know how to pull it all together. Do I need a designer and can I afford one?

Yes, you do and yes, you can! Most homeowners recognize that renovating causes major disruption to their home for a period, so often they won’t undertake more than one project at a time, both for financial reasons and because of the added chaos. An Interior Designer, who specializes in kitchen and bathroom design, can help you come up with a plan for how to get started and how to achieve the overall renovation, within budget and within sequence to your renovation goals.

Having a professional advise you on your renovation is extremely valuable. Apart from space planning, an Interior Designer can provide you with drawings and a list of specifications for the project, estimate a budget and recommend how best to incorporate your future renovation ideas. They can also be your liaison with the builder to ensure your vision is kept on track.

It’s all in the details. A designer will listen to your requirements and use their knowledge and expertise to come up with a plan that is unique to your personal style. It is very important that you end up with a renovation or new home that you love, one that you and your family will enjoy for years to come. In a way, a designer is a “home” counselor, and their listening to your needs is critical.

Interior Design services include space planning, specifying materials, configuring lighting, recommending appliances, designing built-in cabinetry, selecting furniture, art, window treatments and more. Some designer’s knowledge extends to green or sustainable building practices, and incorporates exterior face-lifts and landscape design.

How much is all this advice worth? Interior Designers work in different ways. They will charge an hourly rate, or a percentage of the project’s budget, add a mark up to products, or a combination of these. An experienced designer can usually give you a solid estimate. For example, a kitchen design can start at around $400.00.

If you want to make changes to your living space, but don’t know where to begin, having an objective review of the home is a good place to start. A designer will evaluate the function of the home and recommend ways to incorporate better storage, add natural lighting, and create a better flow from room to room. Sounds appealing, doesn’t it!
