Anti-Aging Secrets - Preventative Maintenance Through the Years

By Fran Agar & Colleen Willoughby of Ballymoon

It’s in the entertainment news all the time; reporters and doctors speculating on which star has been under the knife and those who haven’t; those who have done it right and those who might have just done a bit too much. Who can forget Goldie Hawn’s lips in the movie First Wife’s Clubs!

From chemical peels, laser resurfacing, collagen/fat injections, facial implants to Botox injections, the options are endless on how plastic surgeries can alter your appearance. Some are temporary solutions for the treatment of wrinkles such as Botox; which only lasts three to four months and requires repeat treatments that can cause temporary swelling, discomfort and even acute sensitivity to sun. And some treatments can cost you a small fortune. But, is it necessary? Everyone has their opinion but by just applying some simple daily preventative maintenance you can age well without using medical and aggressive treatments.

Hollywood’s most famous and gorgeous movie star, Marilyn Monroe, once said, “I want to grow old without face-lifts. I want to have the courage to be loyal to the face I have made.” Monroe didn’t have the chance to grow that old but here are some steps you can do today to stay loyal to your face and still have the benefits of a “face-lifting” experience.

In Your 20’s - You are young and radiant! Lucky for you time is on your side right now! Try making your routine as simple and effective as possible to keep up with your free spirit.

Apply sunscreen! This is a must for all ages. To keep your glow and not to damage your face as you age apply daily to your face. Try finding a daily moisturizer with sunblock as you also want to start keeping your face more hydrated.

Take your makeup off at night. Not only is it an excellent routine to get yourself into as you age but it will unclog your pores and helps your skin rejuvenate. Try exfoliating at night also to help smooth your skin and reduce redness.

In Your 30’s - You’ve got the attitude and the confidence to take on the world. But with all great leaps and bounds, certain obstacles can appear such as lines and wrinkles coming more apparent. Keep going with your 20-year-old facial routine and add some extras, such as applying extra moisture to boost and enhance your drying skin. Add a nightly moisturizer to your routine because as you sleep your skin is more subject to deep dehydration. A nightly crème will help nourish and diminish the signs of aging as you sleep.

Applying eye cream to your routine can also help reduce dark circles and reduce puffiness around the eyes.

In Your 40’s - Fun, fabulous and fantastic hits you at 40. And what a better time than this than to show off your extraordinary style. As this period hits though, less elasticity and firmness are common facial problems. No worries though, just add a few more things to your 30-year-old routine such as increasing your moisturizing even more by looking for cleaners and toners containing moisturizing ingredients. You want to retain as much moisture as possible.

Apply anti-wrinkle cream to your eye area in order to tighten the skin and reduce the “depth” of fine lines and wrinkles.

Keep up that exfoliating also. It is important to increase your exfoliating treatments and apply facial masks either to your whole face or as spot treatment.

In Your Fifties and Up - According to Oprah, 50 is it! She said her life is bigger than she could ever imagine, it has it’s own force field and she can feel herself propelling it, guiding it, even. And if you have been doing your daily preventative maintenance your face has created it’s own force field. Keep up the maintenance and one main thing is to start increasing your sunscreen protection. As skin ages it becomes thinner and therefore is more at risk to burning.

Of course, wrinkles are going to appear, but wrinkles just show how many times you have laughed, smiled and cried throughout life. It shows the incredible life journey you have had and will continue to have. You have done what Marilyn Monroe would have liked to succeed at and that is kept the courage to be loyal to the face you have made.

If you have not been keeping up with a skin care regime at this point, damage is going to become more visible and apparent and will of course continue. While you can’t turn back, you can start repairing by applying all of the above hints and tips to your skin care regime. It’s never too late to start taking care of your face, body, mind or spirit!

For All Ages - No matter what your age is make sure you drink lots of water, get lots of sleep and eat healthy. Try using silk pillowcases instead of cotton. Once a day give yourself a stress break, even if it is for only 10 minutes. Sit in a quiet area, close your eyes and visualize all the stress leaving your body. Use deep breaths and allow all your facial muscles relax.

Too many of us carry stress in our faces and by allowing those muscles to relax you are not as likely to get stress lines across your forehead.
