We are committed to providing support, resources &
referrals to women & children affected by domestic abuse. We inspire &
empower women to live violence free lives.
The only thing harder than being in an abusive relationship
is...walking away from one...
Peer Support Services for Abused Women serves women who have experienced
abuse or are at risk of experiencing abuse, wishing to grow beyond their
experiences and achieve violence-free lives for themselves and their
children. PSSAW offers peer-based group and individual counseling and
support, free of charge. PSSAW offers a variety of programs, from individual
support to self-esteem workshops.
The society began in 1985 when a Board member, a glass artist and a crisis
counselor attached to shelters for battered women met to discuss the lack of
support for women leaving first stage shelters. PSSAW was incorporated in
1986 and subsequently received a charitable tax number.
PSSAW receives an annual project grant from the United Way of Calgary and
Area and the City of CalgaryFCSS. The rest of their monies come from private
donations and individual donors and foundations. In the past 15 years, they
have seen thousands of women and children embark on new, violence-free
lives. It is their stories that inspire PSSAW to continue.
Please call or visit the PSSAW website for more information about their
programs, volunteer opportunities or donations. |
