What is Viral Myocarditis?
Myocarditis can be a serious disorder typically caused by viral infections,
medication allergies, certain chemicals or inflammatory diseases. The
definition of myocarditis varies, but generally it is a viral infection of
the heart, with an inflammation and/or damage to the heart muscle, without
the blockage of coronary arteries that define a heart attack. There are
three major forms of the disease: dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive.
Dilated is the most common form. The heart cavity becomes enlarged and
stretched, causing arrhythmias, disturbances in the heart’s electrical
conduction, and possible blood clots. A blood clot that forms in an artery
or the heart is called a “thrombus”. A clot that breaks free, circulates in
the bloodstream and blocks a small blood vessel is called an “embolus”. This
can be a cause of stroke and/or blocked blood circulation to organs, legs
and arms.
In hypertrophic, also known as “hypertrophy”, the muscle mass of the left
ventricle enlarges. These symptoms may include dizziness, fainting,
shortness of breath with exertion, and angina pectoris, a form of chest
pain/discomfort which results from a low supply of blood to the heart
muscle.
Restrictive is the least common form of the disease. The heart muscle of the
ventricles, known as “myocardium”, becomes so rigid that it is more
difficult for the ventricles to fill with blood in between heartbeats. A
person experiencing restrictive cardiomyopathy will often complain about
being tired, may have swollen hands and feet, and may find it difficult to
breathe when exerting energy. This type of cardiomyopathy is usually due to
another disease process.
There are dozens of common viruses, including the adenovirus, coxsackievirus,
poliovirus, echoviruses and influenza viruses, that can be part of the
cause. What I find interesting is that the standard treatments are typically
drugs, which may cause it to become more serious due to risks and side
effects causing strokes, heart attacks, embolisms, etc. There is no
understanding how to treat the underlying virus, inflammation and stress
using pharmaceutical drugs. Alternative therapies are knocked, but I
personally feel that we can help enormously through homeopathy, herbs,
anti-inflammatory digestive enzymes/bio-flavinoids, and known anti-viral
antioxidants, then diet, exercise and stress relief. By taking care of the
root of the disease, we can prevent or even repair the heart walls and
inflammation for lasting results. The blood analysis I do shows the viruses
and heart stress, so we can address it early.
