RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I would like to try holistic therapy but how do I know where to start?

Holistic health care (otherwise known as complementary or alternative health care) is growing in popularity. Many of these practices are based on ancient treatments such as acupuncture and reiki, which have been brought forward thousand of years into our modern world. Holistic medicine treats the individual as a whole person, taking into consideration physical, psychological, cognitive, spiritual, economic and additional factors. While some practitioners offer services in one main area of energy medicine such as homeopathy, others have expertise in several fields. Seeking out the services of one practitioner at a time is a common avenue, the benefits being that health improvements can be more easily traced to a specific strategy as well being cost efficient.

People seek out complementary medicine for many reasons. These may be out of curiosity, or that non-traditional, modern medical options have been exhausted. Some simply choose to take the holistic route first, often having previously succeeded within this realm. It is wise to seek out practitioners who have been trained through an accredited institution. One way of doing this is to check that the chosen practitioner is covered under a regulatory body such as the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada. These organizations assess and approve practitioner’s credentials and provide malpractice and liability insurance for their members. Each practitioner in good standing with their association will show a membership number on client receipts. Many holistic practices are covered under some health insurance benefits plans while others may fall under the umbrella of health spending accounts. Given this, detailed receipts specifying the types of services provided by the therapist are a important item when considering claiming sessions.

Where does one start? Word of mouth referrals are one of the most powerful forms of marketing as they come from those who have benefitted from the services of a particular health care provider. Nothing is more compelling than good results. Practitioners can be found on websites within their fields of practice or through their associations. Therapies often have associated national or even international organizations which list the biographies and contact information of their members. More often than not people report that they chose a specific therapist because they liked their biography or even their photo.
