ASK OUR EXPERTS...

I am worried about Osteoporosis in my years to come. I understand that this is all about the health of my bones. Can you offer some practical supplements to support my bone structure?

Beyond a sufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D, to keep bones at their ultimate, healthy state you need to ensure that they also get a sufficient dose of magnesium, potassium, vitamin K and vitamin B12.

Let’s start with vitamin B12. B12 is an essential water soluble vitamin that is commonly found in a variety of foods such as fish, shellfish, meats and dairy products as well as readily available under an abundance of supplement brands. Generally, B12 helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells, and is also needed to make DNA, the genetic material in all cells...which, of course, plays a huge part in the makeup of our bone.

Vitamin K is known to help create our bones “scaffolding”. Found in spinach, broccoli, kale and Brussel sprouts, studies concerning vitamin K have revealed that it not only increases bone mineral density in osteoporotic people but also actually reduce fracture rates.

Potassium, naturally found in orange juice, raisins, fish and fat-free milk, for example, neutralizes bone-depleting metabolic acids. Bone, and the hydration layer around bone, provides the only substantial reservoir of base available to convert excess metabolic acids. When we exhaust all other available alkali reserves, alkalizing compounds are drawn from in and around bone leading to enhanced bone breakdown and loss of both bone mineral and bone matrix.

Magnesium, naturally found in brown rice, pumpkin seeds and artichokes, for example, works closely with calcium and vitamin D to help form and maintain bones and teeth. Studies have found that women with Osteoporosis tend to have low magnesium levels, and that people with high magnesium intakes have greater bone density.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeleton in which bones become brittle and prone to fracture. In other words, the bone loses density. It is extremely important to keep bone healthy with load barring weight training and supplementing. Consult a reputable naturopath and health practitioner to determine the best daily dosage that suits your situation.
