Stress: Number One Contributing Cause Of Disease

By Janet Rowe of Health & Natural Lifestyles

Are you wondering what’s gotten into you? Are you feeling emotional more often? Do you feel overwhelmed? Have you taken on too much? Are you feeling scattered and nervous? Are you having a hard time getting enough air - are you anxious? Yes, heart palpitations that have suddenly started appearing and that feeling of crashing depression and lack of energy are all truly symptoms of STRESS.

Stress is the number one contributing cause of disease, and encompasses all the aspects of health mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Most of our stress is created from ourselves. So let’s look at what our stressors are and how they interact with the above four components of health.

I want to start with the physical component of stress because it can encompass the other components of health. Stress on the body is the sum or totality of all the components. If we overwork the body physically as in working out, we can have muscular pain. If we overwork the mental, we can have brain pain, or this can also consist of depression - the “all work no play” syndrome which also creates anxiety and that lack of oxygen feeling. So you can see how one aspect can encompass the other components. Now imagine adding the physical body’s contributing factors such as hormones, acidity, circulation and poor nutrition, to name a few. What effects do these have on us? Ever wonder why last year you were able to handle your workload and now you are questioning what’s wrong with you this year. I hear this all the time. Our bodies change, we change, circumstances change, and all of these can mean stress. It is not unlike a car. It is what we put into it, how we maintain it and how fast and hard we drive it as to how long it lasts. So from the human perspective, it creates the dynamic of our choices in feeding our bodies well on a mental, emotional, spiritual and physical basis.

Physical Component - We need to ensure good organic nutrition and/or supplementation to avoid that acidic body, and to feed the brain and control the hormones without chemicals and heavy metals. Our physical health requires minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids, fibre and water. Every gland, organ and system of the human body is dependant on these nutritionally, for functionality. Without their functionality, we don’t handle stress well, produce hormones, release endorphins or have no energy balance.

Water is a huge component in managing/exchanging our waste and fluids. Pure filtered, spring water to encompass minerals is what the body so desperately needs. Mineral deficiency is the one commonality seen in ninety percent of the blood I see, even in a one month old infant. Physical exercise, as well as getting better circulation and elimination, is a very good stress reliever too, and helps create mental alertness, emotional strength, and renewed communication with earth and spirit. Exercise is necessary for creating the balance in life.

Mental Component - The Dale Carnegie course taught me how to stop worrying and start living. Most people who are stressed mentally are worry warts; they worry about everything and everybody else’s stuff, therefore creating the stress. They spend an enormous amount of energy worrying. Why worry about something that is out of our control?

The mental component also needs to reflect what we put into our brains. For example, if we are thinking negative mental thoughts such as failure, fear, bankruptcy, etc., then we have planted the seed, and perhaps created the destiny of that idea. Whereas, if we feed the brain positive ideas, it will respond with positive results, through positive actions, creating success. Take the time to think positively and be around positive people, it can change your life. Who wants to be the altered-ego, control freak listening to their brain, and not their soul, basically letting their ego get in the way and breaking into anger and rage when they can’t control the situation or their victims. Think of the stress the victim suffers as well. This again is self-inflicted stress, we can’t control those in our lives, we can only give them our love, guidance and acceptance. Everyone must live their own journey.

Emotional Component - Why are we so hard on ourselves? Why do we take things personally? Why do we insist on making ourselves miserable? Where is our self esteem? We can not blame this stuff on others; we need to take responsibility ourselves. Emotional health comes from within. Think about it, when you feel great about things, then you feel great about yourself, you usually feel well on all levels. Consider this for a moment, when a person causes us stress, it’s usually something about that person we don’t like, or is it something in ourselves that we need to release. We need to live life with some play, laughter and fun times for balance and sanity.

Spiritual Component - Last but not least, this is where the true peace is. This is the component that can pull it all together. I can not imagine life without meditation and prayer. Silent time, time alone with me, time to chat with my God/Spirit, angels and guides, time to figure out me, time to visualize and a time to love me. This time is needed to give thanks for every person, thing and lesson in our lives. This is a time to ask for the guidance needed to heal from fear, anxiety, control/ego, anger, and a time to sort out our brain/soul stuff and to accept what is best for our higher good. The trust and belief in a higher spirit can aid in the mental, emotional and physical stability for ease of every day being positive.

The bottom line is we make the choice to be stressed, and the universe will only give you what you can handle. Choose to live with balance, setting boundaries, communicating well and letting go of our emotional/mental baggage. Allow and trust the spirit to guide and show you the way; a less stressful way!
