My
Spa At Home
- Popular Spa Treatments
By Fran Agar & Colleen Willoughby of Ballymoon
A day at the spa gives us time to unwind and allows our minds, bodies and
souls to revive. However, sometimes it just isn’t feasible to experience the
spa - whether it is time restraints, financial or general life issues. Now
what if you could create your own spa right in the comforts of your own
home? Yes, you can schedule this in and use your own ingredients too! Create
your own spa menu out of any of these seven popular spa treatments:
1) Cleansing Treatment - Give your face an instant glow and cleaning through
a facial steam. Facial steams help rid impurities and hydrate the skin. It
is one of the best ways to clean your pores and release toxins.
Instructions:
- Boil three cups of water and pour into a bowl. Let the water cool down
until warm.
- Add a few drops of essential oils (perhaps Lavender, Sweet Orange or Ylang
Ylang) to turn your facial steam into a spa experience. If you are suffering
from a cold or flu, add some eucalyptus (it’s one of the best oils to use as
a decongestant).
- Use a towel to create a tent over your head and shoulders.
- Hold your head close to the bowl, close your eyes and breath in deeply.
2) Tightening Treatment - As we age we lose more elasticity and firmness in
our face. Rectify the problem by creating a face mask that helps soften and
tighten pores.
Ingredients:
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp whole milk
- 1 tbsp of honey
- 1/2 tsp of brewers yeast
Beat one egg and then mix in other ingredients. Put on over wet face and
leave for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
3) Repairing Treatment - Hair tells a lot about a person. The way a person
cuts it, styles it and most importantly how they take care of it. The sun,
chlorine, salt, bleach and hair colour can damage your hair. Take a moment
to repair your hair by giving it a lavender hair treatment.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of Olive Oil
- 2 tbsp of Honey
- 12 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
- 2 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
Warm olive oil and honey over low heat. Remove from heat and add lavender
and tea tree. Apply to damp hair while oil is warm. Cover head with shower
cap, then cover cap with a warm towel from dryer. Leave on for 20 - 25
minutes. Rinse out, then shampoo.
4) Speedy Treatment - If you don’t have the time to give yourself a
manicure, do the next best thing and clean up your nails and cuticles
instantly with this nail and cuticle treatment. You will get groomed hands
fast.
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp of Grapeseed Oil
- 2 tbsp of Jojoba Oil
- 3 tbsp of Olive Oil
- 3 tbsp of Honey
- 5 Vitamin E capsules (you will have to break them open)
Mix all ingredients and apply. This will make a few batches but it can be
stored in the fridge to use the next week.
5) Exfoliation Treatment - Removing dead skin on your face unclogs pores
that lead into spots or blackheads. This papaya mask will improve your
complexion immediately.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup mashed (ripe) papaya
- 1tsp plain yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon of honey
Mix all ingredients until paste like. Put on face, leave on for 15 minutes
and rinse with warm water. Note: If you have oily skin, do not allow your
mask to over dry. Your brain will register the loss of water in the
over-drying process and produce more oil. This oil will not show up on the
skin until about 48 hours after the treatment.
6) Hydrating Treatment - This treatment you can apply everyday just by using
the simple effects of hydrotherapy. It is one of the most effective methods
to relax, rejuvenate and heal. By using water and temperature you can reap
several different effects. If your muscles are tense and you are feeling
stressed, have a hot shower or bath. The hot water soothes and quiets the
body and slows down the activity of internal organs. However, if you are
feeling tired, start with a warm shower and then follow with a burst of cold
invigorating water to help stimulate your body and mind.
7) Pampering Treatment - Leave the outside world behind and create your
bathroom into an oasis with this pampering treatment. Start running a warm
bath and then establish scents by disbursing tiny amounts of essential oils
in the air (such as the relaxing scent of lavender). Place tea lights
throughout the room and put on soothing music. Once in bath, mix your soap
with a little oil (such as olive, sesame or grapeseed) so you don’t dry out
your skin. Massage and clean your body with the soap or try pouring 1 cup of
milk into a bowl and rub it over your wet body. It will leave your skin soft
and glowing. Once you are out of the bath, rub lotion or body butter for
extra moisturizing, slip into your pajamas and prepare yourself for an
uninterrupted sleep to wake up refreshed and re-vitalized.
