RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
I have a huge family gathering scheduled for Christmas and I of course
have to outdo what my sister-in-law did last year. Any ideas on unique
Holiday decor?
Want to “wow!” the guests? Then think outside the box! Not only choose a
theme, but plan to carry that theme throughout the house to create a festive
mood within every room.
Last Christmas I attended a party where the hostess placed different
decorative Christmas trees within each room, even within the bathrooms! It’s
was spectacular! Each tree was adorned with ornaments that matched or
complimented the existing decor. Her bathroom trees were the most unique as
she had decorated three foot fake traditional evergreen trees with
incredibly luxurious face towels. The trees sat between the “his” and “hers”
sinks and guests were encouraged to use the towels as needed. Most
entertaining was that new towels were perfectly replaced in the void spots
every time I visited the ladies room!
Now granted this hostess had huge amounts of space to afford to showcase
trees within each of her rooms, however the same can be done with smaller
spaces by using wreaths instead. Undecorated wreaths can be found in
abundance and in a variety of sizes during the holiday season. They are
generally inexpensive and can be easily dolled up with just as inexpensive
decor. Christmas decorating “picks” can be found at craft shops and dollar
stores. All it takes is a grouping of two or three picks hot glued here and
there on a wreath to make it look welcoming. If you are in the market
pre-decorated wreaths, why not hit your Farmers Market or Holiday Trade
Fairs and support our local artisans!
Another unique and inexpensive decorating technique is to use lengths of
garland throughout the house. Garland can be easily wrapped on banisters,
tacked around door wells and displayed on mantels and other flat surface
furniture. Securing bundles of Christmas bows and glass ornaments every foot
or so adds an interesting touch. On my mantel I hide a string of lights
within my garland to light it up.
For the dinner table there are so many unique touches you can add using
untraditional items. Try filling a large glass pillar vase with spruce cones
and miniature red glass balls. The most amazing table presentation I have
ever seen was a display of various sized gingerbread houses along the centre
of the table. The hostess created a road made from loose candy and foiled
chocolates to each house. It looked like a little town. Bet your
sister-in-law never thought of that?!
