RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I just received devastating news that a close young relative of mine has a fatal disease. How can I get out of the slump that I’m in right now? Everything is dark and depressing.

We never wish to be in this situation, and when it happens, it’s overwhelming and depressing. It seems unfair and it certainly reminds us that our days on this planet are limited. To help you move more positively through your journey, let me offer you the following.

First of all, you must stay well as you will be more effective and more able to support your relative if you are. Sleep is of critical importance as it provides time for your body and mind to heal and deal with the days’ events. If you don’t have a regular exercise regime, just go for a 20 minute walk each day. The fresh air which will give you focus and allow for the release of tension. Take a close look at how you are nourishing your body. Perhaps now is the time to implement healthy eating habits. There is lots of support in all of these areas, so reach out and get assistance to stay well. Bad news is stressful but I want you to know that what’s most impactful is how you perceive this stressful situation. Your perception determines the impact of the stress and yes, you do have a choice in how to respond.

Getting sudden bad news rattles what we believe to be true about ourselves and the world we live in. “This just can’t happen to him. He’s so young” or “It just doesn’t run in the family” are all statements reflecting what we believe about our world and ourselves. We experience this cognitive dissonance as frustration, anger and confusion. When our belief system is challenged, it’s time to shift our perception of the world. Look for the gift this challenge offers you. Are you about to discover how compassionate, patient, creative, nurturing, strong, supportive and loving you are? It’s like a treasure hunt; life is presenting you a gem and it is well hidden behind sadness and grief.

Explore the awareness that you have a choice in how you are going to move through your journey with this new situation as a part of your life. Notice what is fueling your thoughts and feelings. Are you coming from a place of love, or a place of fear? When you start choosing thoughts, feelings and actions based on love, your journey lightens, and you find the strength to be who you can be. There are only two emotions, love and fear. Everything else derives from these two energies. Moving away from fear-based thought patterns will be beneficial for everyone concerned and provide support within the context of a nurturing and loving experience.
