RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
How can I reclaim my sexual identity after
Breast Cancer Reconstruction?
The “C” word, as in “cancer”, is probably the worst word you will ever hear.
The breast cancer battle affects WAY too many of us, and changes our lives
forever. It changes our ideas of who we are as women, and some of us feel as
if we’ve lost a huge part of who we were. We look at our bodies after, look
at our battle wounds, and know that our life will never be the same. But it
also makes us Warriors; women who KNOW that we can be victorious over any
challenge!
If you are a Breast Cancer Warrior, who looks in the mirror and feels like
there is still something missing, consider this: You can safely, painlessly
and permanently place a realistic-looking nipple/areola complex where it is
most flattering to your new body! There are specialized tattooing services,
called “nipple/areola reconstructive tattoo”, that can match to your
existing nipple/areola in a unilateral mastectomy, or make new ones for a
bilateral!
Or, you can get creative and have something beautiful designed to enhance
your new shape to cover over the scars left behind from your battle! Through
specialized tattooing, you do have the option to entertain, say for example,
flowing swirls and flowers cascading over your shoulder, or up your rib
cage. For some, this is a beautiful way to celebrate your new body. The
possibilities are endless!
This process is almost identical to tattooing, only the approach is
different. The tattoo artist first takes scar tissue, stretched skin and
body shape into account now. Scar Tissue can be tricky to tattoo over, and
pose many minor problems. This is taken into consideration when the artist
plans the placement. All options are discussed during your initial
consultation. This procedure may also take up to 6 visits, including
consultation, touch-ups, and final consultation. You also need to consider
that the tattooed area may need to be “freshened up” once a decade or so.
All in all, this new part of you is very low maintenance and completely
worth it!
When considering this option, seek out a tattoo artist who is highly
qualified and one that specializes in nipple/areola reconstructive tattoo.
It is also recommended that you wait at least a full year after a
mastectomy, for the tissue to heal and relax, and the scar tissue to mature.
This way, you will have the best final results.
