RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
I’m tired of watching my investments go up
and down. I’m ready to give up. What can I do?
It is completely natural to feel nervous and exasperated when it comes to
your investments right now. In the past three years, you have experienced
the worst recession in fifty years. Followed by constant media coverage on
the financial crisis in the U.S. and around the world, it is understandable
that you may feel as though you are standing still or at times even moving
backwards.
Have you ever experienced motion sickness? One common suggestion is to
choose a stationary point in the distance and focus on it until the nausea
passes. Quite the same remedy holds true for your investments. It is very
easy to get “motion sickness” when you have one person advising you to stay
invested, another telling you to sell everything, and still more people
suggesting you do something entirely different. The key is to focus on that
stationary point in the distance: your end goal. Your financial advisor will
be able to help you build a road map so that you stay on track and ensure
that you will arrive at your destination safely and in a timely manner.
When you make the decision to start saving money for your retirement, you
are essentially planting a tree. At the beginning, the tree will require a
lot of care and fertilizer, and over time it will hopefully blossom into a
tree that may provide shade for you and your family. Over the years, your
tree will experience droughts, hailstorms, or if you live in Calgary, then
many severe snowstorms. Imagine if you panicked every time there was a
snowstorm and decide to dig up the tree to put in your garage. Not only
would that not help the tree in any way, but it will likely even harm it.
Your investments work quite the same way. You need to stay calm, be patient,
and stay focused on your end goal.
Building wealth over time is significantly different than getting rich
overnight. If it is your goal to build wealth so you can enjoy retirement,
or leave a legacy, then it is important to have a financial strategy that
will help you stay on track. It will also help eliminate “motion sickness”
during uncertain markets. Find a financial advisor that you trust to help
you make sense of investing.
