RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I have never consigned my clothing before. What are the key things I need to know and what is the process?

More and more people are considering consignment for their gently-worn clothing and accessories for many reasons:

- It keeps your closets from becoming cluttered with items you are not likely to wear
 again;

- It is an economical way to re-wardrobe for a recent change in size or lifestyle;

- It improves cash flow towards new items;

- And it helps the environment!

Start by choosing a store that has proven success with the type of items you have to sell. Ask your friends for a referral, or check online for a review. Look for a store that has a professional affiliation, such as the Better Business Bureau or National Association of Resale and Thrift Stores.

Choosing the store that best represents your style will go a long way towards ensuring a successful result. Begin by researching the stores you might do business with and find out what their policies are. It is important to know what sells best for them, what items they need, and how they would like them presented. Do they want all the clothing on hangers, or are they required in a box? Is dry cleaning required? It is also important to have a clear understanding of the store’s policies. Read the contract carefully and ask questions. This is a business arrangement, even if it feels like you are just cleaning out your closet! Be clear about any financial expectations you may have so the store you choose can let you know if they are reasonable. When will you get paid? Will it be cash or in-store credit? Will you pick up unsold items, or will the store donate them for you? What is your responsibility if you choose to pick them up? Will they call you or do you need to connect with them?

Expect that not all items presented will be accepted for sale and trust the shopkeeper’s judgment. Her professional appraisal of your items is based on what her clientele is eager to buy and what price points will get you the best possible return on your previously-enjoyed clothes and accessories. Remember, once you have chosen the store and left your items with them, you need to let them do their business! The research you have done has shown you that they can handle things for you.
