RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
I am trying to
manage a household, a full time job and two kids. Most days I can barely
hold it together. Any kind of personal or parenting renewal seems an elusive
prospect. Where do I begin?
It sounds like you are aware of your need for refreshment and renewal. This
indicates that you are ready to take a next step toward intentionally
creating more of the life and family you truly want. Here are a few ideas to
help you make a beginning.
Take really excellent care of yourself in small but significant ways. Know
that when you do this, you are in much better shape to do your work, parent
your children and manage daily life. You will be giving from an abundance of
personal well being in all the other dimensions of your life. Life is about
relationships and relationships are sustained much more by who we are than
what we do. What small act of personal self care would feel totally
delicious to you right now? Extra sleep? Connection with a friend? What
gifts of self care can you offer yourself daily, weekly or monthly?
Thoughtfully, and determinedly say “yes” to a deeper longing. Take an
extended period of time (minimum 3 hours) to consider what you really want
from life right now, independent of all the “shoulds” and “have-to’s” that
currently vie for your energy. Ask yourself: If somehow there were indeed
enough hours in the day, what would I be able to do or become that just
isn’t possible now? What secret passion or possibility have I been guarding?
What small act of intention could I take that would make this part of my
present reality? Is there a lesser something I can say “no”to in favour of
this greater “yes”?
Don’t just do it - create it! Think of yourself as a prime creative force in
your own life. Instead of making “To Do Lists” to get yourself through the
day, fashion “To Create Lists”. This simple adjustment releases you from the
many expectations associated with your various roles. The creative twist
frees you to consider fresh perspectives on your daily life and shifts your
focus onto the personal meaning of what you do. Asking “What do I want to
create today?” can move you from an experience of merely coping to one of
thriving in a life of your own choosing.
When you purposely take care of yourself, nurture your dreams and re-create
meaning from the mundane, your renewal becomes real and evidenced to
yourself and everyone around you.
