I think I have a fungal infection on some of my toenails. What causes
this type of infection and how can I get rid of it?
If your toes nails are discolouring and flaking, then this is definitely
a fungal infection, which is common. The good news is that fungus growing in
the nail bed, where the nail meets the skin, does not spread to internal
organs. The unfortunate news is that it can be hard to get rid of it and if
left unattended, the damage could be most hideous! Yellow discoloration is
only the beginning; there are many cases where the nail itself turns black,
becomes crumbly, grows irregularly or even falls off.
The two most common types of nail fungi are yeast (Candida) and
dermatophytes. Dermatophytes tend to be more common in toenails and yeast
infections are seen more frequently in fingernails.
The reason one attracts fungal infections varies. This can include factors
such as a history of trauma or damage to the toenail, hereditary factors, or
wearing shoes that have poor circulation (manmade materials). It has also
been documented that people with weaker immune systems, diabetes and
circulatory problems are at greater risk for developing toenail fungus.
While it is recommended that you seek professional advice first before
trying to address this issue yourself, some infections respond to topical
antifungal creams, lotions and gels. Others require oral medicines.
One “home remedy” that may work (along side your professional advice) is to
try doing vinegar foot baths. Studies have shown that fungus cannot survive
in an acidic environment. Vinegar is definitely acidic. In your foot bath or
a large container, pour in equal parts of vinegar and warm water. Soak daily
for half an hour. When the infected area of the nail starts to soften,
gently scrape away using a metal nail file. Be patient and persistent. This
is a long process as it could take anywhere from a month to four months to
see results. After each foot bath, massage vitamin E oil over the infected
area and cover with clean cotton socks.
Some ways that may help to prevent fungal infections include keeping your
feet dry and always wear socks when wearing enclosed footwear. You should
also avoid wearing nonporous, closed shoes made of synthetic materials and
always wear shoes or sandals in public places such as showers, poolside, the
beach, etc. Regular nail care and trimming is very important as well.
