RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

Should I have my daughter vaccinated for HPV?

From what we have been reading, we would suggest you do some serious research before making what could be a life threatening decision!

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted disease that spreads by skin contact with an infected genital area. HPV causes many different types of infections and although you may be infected there are no signs or symptoms. In the past few years a product called Gardasil Vaccine (produced by Merck & Co.) became available on the market claiming protection against HPV types 6 and 11 (which cause 90% of genital warts) and 16 and 18 (which cause 70% of cervical cancers). The target audience is young women 9 to 26 years of age. Although approved by the FDA and funded by the Federal Government as an accepted vaccine program, the controversy is making headlines that we all need to pay attention to.

Now before we get into some of the shocking details, keep in mind that countless research has already stated that HPV is usually benign. An example of this is in an article posted on March 21, 2007 at www.fwdailynews.com  It states: “75% or more of girls and women may test positive for HPV at some points in their lives. But, in adolescents, in 75–90% of those cases, the virus clears up on its own within 8–12 months, including those that may be cancer-causing.”

It is also important to note that according to date there is no solid proof that the Gardasil vaccine is effective or safe. In fact, many health institutes are making public statements of concern that this HPV vaccine is developing a false sense of security about women’s sexual activity. “An HPV vaccine does not eliminate the need for protected sex or prudence about one’s choice and frequency of sexual partners. Barrier methods of protection (i.e. condoms) are necessary to prevent HIV/AIDS and other types of infection.” ( www.cwhn.ca )

Since the approval of Gardasil in July 2008, the National Vaccine Information Centre in the US has reported more than 8838 life threatening incidents. This includes shocking realities such as 15 patients dying, 159 becoming disabled and 1236 showing no signs of recovery. ( www.medalerts.org ) In the US, vaccine reactions are available to the public via their official Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). Canada does not have a publicly accessible monitoring system, meaning that the public is not aware of the degree to which vaccine reactions and injuries are occurring in our country.
