I have been hearing a lot about whole body vibration exercise. What is this and what are the benefits?

Whole body vibration is a term used to describe human exposure to vibration through feet, buttocks and/or back. The concept was developed to increase total body health and performance. Though it has been used since the early 1900’s, it was not until 1970’s - after the Russians refined this technology in the development of their athletic programs as well as their Russian Space Programs - when the benefits started to capture the attention of health, fitness and medical professionals. While the use of vibration exercise and training is still a relatively new concept, a wide body of supportive clinical research exists, the very reason why it’s popularity is growing. To date, whole body vibration exercise has been introduced throughout Europe, Asia and is now making its way into the North American market.

So how does it work? When a muscle fibre is stretched, it will contract by reflex. By standing on vibration equipment, usually a platform, low-speed, low amplitude vibration is transmitted throughout the whole body. This causes thousands of muscle contractions, which increase muscle tone. The movement of the vibration “plate” stimulates the body’s natural reflexes to stretch and contract. Whole body vibration exercise and therapy works your muscles from the inside out. The vibration effect basically stimulates cellular movement which compliments the natural, constant healing process always occurring inside your body. Research has been revealing that this form of body “motion” has substantial benefits including increased circulation, muscle strength and flexibility as well as better range of motion, core conditioning and stability, and faster muscle recovery after working out.

The latest research is finding that the health benefits also include enhanced metabolism, increased bone mineral density, reduction of the stress hormone cortisol, elevation of human growth hormone levels, and improved lymphatic flow. Whole body vibration is also said to reduce cellulite and stimulate collagen production for smoother skin.

Ideal for individuals at any fitness level or age, whole body vibration is also noted to provide muscle toning and conditioning for those who have health restrictions that keep them from exercising, such as multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and some forms of arthritis.
