Can yoga help me with weight loss?

By Aleksandra Suriel of Full Figure Yoga

In a simple one word answer, “yes!” Whatever amount of weight you desire to lose, yoga can definitively help you get there.

Yoga has a number of benefits that are not often considered by many people. First of all, unlike other disciplines, yoga is very nourishing to all body parts. Through the use of different poses, stimulation and massage of the organs and glands benefit the body by increasing the immune system. Stimulating the thyroid gland and also rejuvenating the digestive system, yoga is able to help increase the metabolic rate of the body to increase the fat burning capacity.

Through the daily use of yoga poses, many toxins begin to release from the body and a process of internal cleansing occurs - complete detoxification! Gently stretching the muscles as well as massaging the internal organs, yoga is providing an increase of blood supply to the whole body, thus helping to flush the toxins out and providing healthy oxygenated blood to a larger surface area of the body. When a person is overweight, it can be more challenging to get the adequate blood flow, as well as increased stamina. The gentle practice of yoga allows one to achieve both and maintain the results for life. The most commonly known aspects that we notice in many yogis is delayed ageing, energy and increased enthusiasm for life.

What yoga is mostly known for is its amazing capacity for increasing flexibility. Each pose acts on various joints of the body, at the same time production of the synovial fluid that lubricates joints increases, keeping them healthier and providing more protection.

Because yoga engages your entire body in all the poses, muscles that have become flaccid or weak are stimulated to shed excess fat and increase elasticity. Results are felt very quickly as the body has amazing adaptability to things that are healthy. Furthermore, yoga is a life-science philosophy, which can be used to support all major faith traditions. The best part of the yogic practice that helps with weight loss on and off the mat is meditation. It teaches the practitioner mindful approach to food, environment, surroundings and emotions thus creating much greater awareness in your body. Meditation is a practice where one begins to cultivate internal peace and calmness, achieving an emotional balance. Meditative practice helps to cultivate appreciation of ones body, develops a positive self image and helps to balance the stresses of daily life.
