RISING WOMEN EXPERTS...
How can I add some colour to my home without making a huge commitment?
By Vicky Blaine of Inner Space Home Styling
To have colour in the home, many people jump to the conclusion that they
must paint the walls. This is, after all, the easiest and cheapest way to
make the biggest change, and the right colour on the walls sets the mood for
the rest of the space. However, as easy as paint is to change, it still
takes time and money, and you probably don’t want to make that investment
more often than necessary. Many a homeowner has known the disappointment of
choosing a colour they loved on the 2”x 2” chip, only to find it looked very
different on a large scale. So if you are unsure of trying a colour, or if
you fear the permanency of a paint job, rest assured that there are many
other ways to think about colour.
To make a change that draws the focus away from those neutral walls, look to
soft furnishings. Fabric is an easy way to create a mood with colour. Add to
that the choices of patterns and textures, and the options are limitless.
Window treatments, slipcovers, throw pillows, bench seat cushions, table
linens and bedding are all ways to use colourful fabrics. This not only
gives you the opportunity to experiment with colour, but to change it as
frequently as your heart desires. Heavier fabrics in rich, vibrant colours
can cozy up your space in the winter months, but are easily replaced in
spring with lighter, airy materials in paler tones. You can create several
completely different looks against that neutral background you thought you
despised!
Colour schemes can be created through accessories, such as a vibrant
lampshade, a beautiful area rug, a bright plant pot, a woven blanket, exotic
souvenirs from a trip, a wall hanging, pottery, blown glass, framed
photographs or artwork (and don’t forget about the frames, they come in
different colours too!). Plants and flowers, rocks and stones, and items
made of wood bring the colours of nature into your home. Metals add colour
as well, so use items in wrought iron, brushed nickel or silver, or antiqued
bronze.
Using colour in these ways is extremely versatile, making them easy and
economic solutions to decorating. You’ll be more comfortable trying out new
and different colour schemes knowing that change is just one reversible
pillow cover away.
