RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
I want to “go green” with my home renovation but I am overwhelmed.
Where do I start? There are many aspects to be considered in creating a “Green” home. We
find that the most publicized concern is energy savings. From new
technologies such as solar panels and geothermal heat systems, to windows
and insulation, to Energy Star appliances, reducing energy consumption is
always in the news. These are obviously all vital concerns, but I recommend
taking a “Health First” approach to any home project. With so many illnesses
and health issues linked to toxic home environments, addressing the health
of your indoor spaces is the place to start.
Major culprits in indoor pollution include synthetic carpeting and underlay
which not only out-gasses chemicals found in plastics and flame retardant
sprays, but also can be a breeding ground for allergens and dust-mites;
chemicals in paints; and formaldehyde found in adhesives and particle
boards. One of the best strategies is to start with the bedrooms. Good
health starts where you sleep. This is where our body heals and regenerates.
As we sleep our defense mechanisms relax, allowing our body to be more
susceptible to toxins, but also more receptive to a positive environment.
1) Choose renovation materials wisely - Do your research to
make sure that what you surround yourself with is free of offgassing VOC’s,
flame-retardants, anti-microbials and other chemicals that can end up in
your body. A natural solution will often be the best. Many natural materials
will not only be free of chemicals, but will also remove toxins from the
air. A clay wall plaster is one example.
2) Reduce or eliminate sources of harmful electromagnetic radiation -
Things to consider are: positioning the bed away from electrical
outlets, using a wired telephone and a battery powered alarm clock.
3) Choose organic materials for bedding, mattress and pillows -
We spend hours in direct contact with the bed. Organic cottons, latex
and wool eliminate off-gassing and naturally resist fire and allergens.
These materials can be beautiful, comfortable and durable.
4) Make it you! - Far too often I hear people talking about
resale and choosing boring. Make it fun! Express your spirit with your
design so you get to enjoy it.
Consider these simple tips when planning your dream renovation. Your home is
a sanctuary for you and your family; make it look and feel great! There are
many products on the market now that are healthy, safe, beautiful and
durable.
