RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
How do I overcome fears and phobias?
What is stopping you from making some positive changes in your life? The
answer is it is often irrational fears that keep us stuck. As a Clinical
Hypnotherapist working with clients for over 11 years, therapeutically we
often come across these fears at the root of the presenting issues. A
rational fear of something dangerous is an essential safety mechanism that
keeps us from harm, but irrational fears can be self-limiting.
We are only born with two fears; the fear of falling and the fear of loud
noises. We have learned the rest, so therefore if they are learned, they can
be unlearned. Similarly, no phobia arrives spontaneously; there is always an
underlying cause. Perhaps you are already aware of the fear that keeps you
stuck? The number one fear is public speaking followed closely by the fear
of death. The fear of rejection prevents us from asking someone on a date,
or we avoid expressing ourselves honestly and clearly to others. The fear of
failure creates avoidance and procrastination. Often the thought of
confronting the fear, or being exposed to, say a spider, for example, can be
so frightening that the phobic avoids treatment to remove the fear. A phobia
is a fear that is interfering with our daily lives.
The solution is to take some steps now, rather than letting the fear
continue it debilitating hold indefinitely. First, identify your fear and
then choose to move away from reading self-help books to actually taking
some action. Take some time to contemplate and write down all the ways you
can see how making a positive change will improve your life. Ask yourself,
what would your life look like if you were free of this fear? Understand
that no matter what happens in your life, you can handle it!
Redefining the fears helps to lessen the negative, emotional impact. For
example, see failure as another way in which we learn. Choose to talk to
yourself like you would your own best friend. Allow yourself to feel the
fear and then take action to move through the feeling and face the
situations. Ask that guy on a date, make a presentation for work, do things
that will push you past the comfort zone bit by bit.
Hypnosis is a great tool for overcoming fears and phobias. Plus, the good
news is that it offers quick and lasting change. It all takes place whilst
you enjoy a natural, deep state of relaxation in which you are more
responsive to the positive suggestions, which are designed to help you
overcome these outdated, unwanted fears.
