RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I don’t know very much about investments. How do I get started?

You do know a lot about investments! You likely just don’t realize it. We, as women, are faced with investment decisions virtually every day of our lives. When we go to a grocery store, we stock up on sale items. When we go into a clothing store, we make sure that we’re buying quality clothing. We naturally have the ability to be incredibly smart with our money, and these are the same principles that we use to apply to our investments.

To be able to accomplish anything, we need two things: Skills and Tools. You already have the skills, and these skills are being honed on a regular basis just by you living your everyday life. Investments are tools; nothing more, nothing less. You need to understand how these tools can help you. Education is key. You may have a financial advisor that takes care of everything, or maybe have a partner who looks after the finances. The reality is, you need to hold yourself accountable for your own financial well-being because that’s the best way that you can truly protect yourself.

The most straight-forward way to get started is to find a financial advisor. Finding the right advisor is key. Finding someone that you trust has your best interest at heart will make all the difference in your experience with investing. Ask all the questions and ask for explanations. Focus on the right things. Returns and the markets are beyond our control. Find somebody that knows who you are, what you dream of accomplishing, and where you want life to take you.

Many people think that you need to have a lot to get started, and that is simply not true. Everybody has to start somewhere and the earlier you start, the more likely you will attain your goals. You will be amazed at what a “little” can do over the course of time. An advisor would be able to work with you to establish the steps to get started.

Many financial institutions now provide complimentary workshops and seminars. Take advantage of those. These seminars will give you an opportunity to get to know the advisor, the company, and the way they educate their clients. Start with basic investment workshops and choose topics that are relevant to you.
