RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I’ve tried so many weight loss diets, but I just don’t have the willpower to stick with it. What can I do?

The fact that you have difficulty sticking with it indicates that there may be subconscious patterns or beliefs that are blocking your success. The concept of “dieting” has connotations of deprivation which is not very conducive to success. To change behaviour, we need to look at the part of the mind that controls behaviour.

Our subconscious mind comprises 90 to 95% of our mind while the conscious mind is only 5 to 10%. When people use willpower to accomplish a goal, they are using the smaller portion of their mind that is very logical and linear. Unfortunately, we are not just logical, linear thinking human beings. There is a very large part of our make-up that is driven by our emotions and sensory input. This includes past experiences, beliefs, perceptions, assumptions and ideals. Our behaviour patterns are ruled by our subconscious mind.

Using techniques that allow you to access the subconscious part of the mind will bring the most success for changing a behaviour like eating. Because eating has so many symbols attached to it and can equate to a variety of meanings to different people such as being nurtured, rewarded, pacified, calmed or used as a substitute for love, it is important to address what eating means for you personally. When you can tap into the significance that food holds for you and restructure your beliefs about it, then you will hold the key to making significant and lasting change with eating habits and lifestyle changes.

Many modalities can help with re-patterning behaviour. Techniques that slow down your brain wave patterns that allow for a more direct line of communication with the subconscious mind will help with addressing the root of the pattern of eating behaviour imbalances. While in this relaxed state using positive affirmations will help restructure your behaviour patterns. By balancing both hemispheres of the brain, you can assist in removing barriers to your success, changing beliefs about food and clearing the path for a positive outcome. When you can address the subconscious behaviour with a technique that accesses the subconscious part of the mind instead of just the conscious part of the mind, it is much easier to achieve success.
