RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I’ve been promoted and I’d like to improve my look so people take me seriously. How do I build a career wardrobe?

Our career wardrobe is extremely important because it lets our clients and colleagues know what our status is in the company. When our appearance, personality and productivity all communicate the same message we have what is called “image integrity”. We need our image to express, “I am capable, reliable, organized, and I belong here.” We want our customers to see us and think: “This person can solve my problems, I’ll give them my business.”

First, study the people in your workplace. Examine their clothing, shoes, jewelry (watches for men), briefcases or handbags, make up, hair and accessories. Who looks the part and why? You want to dress for your position or for one position above you. This shows that you are dressed for success.

Your image communication tools are color, line, fit and fabric. Dark or bright colors convey the highest level of business authority, as opposed to muted or pastel colors. Black exudes authority and power while navy blue imparts honesty and integrity. White says hopeful and reliable, charcoal gray indicates strength of character, and indigo relays creativity and intuition. Therefore, for both men and women, business suits in black, dark gray and navy blue are a great staple to invest in. Straight lines and geometric patterns in clothing also project a high level of business authority. Structured jackets with straight shoulders, pockets and hems have a higher level of formality than ones with rounded shoulders or curved hem lines. Additionally, crisp shirts with pointed collars and straight lines are an integral part of any professional’s wardrobe.

Fit is crucial in all areas of the work wardrobe. Taking items to the tailor for fine tuning is a must. Clothing off the rack often fits in certain places but not in others due to standardized sizing which doesn’t account for unique body types. When clothing is too large, extra fabric adds bulk and appears sloppy. Once altered, these items fit properly and have a more refined shape. Proper hemming of pants, skirts and sleeves is inexpensive and rewarding.

When purchasing work clothes, choose crisp fabrics in fine textures for a more powerful presence. Ironed cotton shirts, structured wool jackets, and fine blended wool slacks all depict sophistication. Accessories, grooming and poise are the final touches to a successful image.
