RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
I have a nasty corn on the fourth toe on each of my feet. They make
wearing heels sometimes painful. What can I do about them?I am sure there are hundreds of women that
can relate to corns, especially us high-heeled, shoe loving Divas. Corns are
nasty and unsightly lumps of dead skin that accumulate around areas of
irritated tissue on your feet. The main cause is ill-fitting shoes,
especially the ones with the pointy toes. Though they seem to be a never
ending battle, there are ways of getting rid of them naturally.
One of the best remedies I have found is using cocoa butter. This oil is an
all-natural plant fat filled with antioxidants. It is very rich and when
applied it keeps the area moist and hydrated for a very long time. While
lounging in front of the TV, slather the corn area on your feet with this
rich butter and let them soak it up for as long as you can. You can also
apply just before going to bed. Tie plastic sandwich bags around your feet
to avoid spoiling your linens. This regime will help to moisten the hard
skin so you can address the corns later or in the morning with a pumice
stone.
After an hour or so, or the next day, soak your feet in warm water for about
half an hour. I like to add Epson salts and essential oils to my water for
the full Spa effect. Lemon essential oil is an excellent choice for corns
because it is antiseptic, astringent, antiviral and a great skin stimulant.
It will leave your feet tingling.
Soaking in your home spa solution will further help to loosen the skin.
Next, gently “sand” the corn area with your pumice stone. Don’t over do it.
If it starts to hurt, stop. This process needs to be done more that once
over a period of time. If you are diligent, you can get the lumps to a bare
minimum.
Another effective natural remedy is to create a concoction of Borax, Iodine,
and bran. Add to warm water and soak your feet in it for up to half an hour.
Borax is the most important ingredient because of its acidic nature. This
helps to gently exfoliate the dead skin cells. The Iodine prevents infection
and the bran helps to life out excess dirt and oils for the calloused area.
The reason I stress naturally addressing your corns is because medicated
corn pads have been known to irritate the skin underneath the corn and in
many cases cause infection. From what I have been reading on the internet
the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons doesn’t even recommend
these products.
