RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

It’s everywhere I turn! How do I “Hold Steady” in the financial downturn we are experiencing?

I made the mistake of listening to the radio news yesterday while running errands. By the time I finished I was practically in tears. I’d heard a dozen in depth stories exploring the downward spiraling world economic situation; thousands losing homes, charities cutting programs. I started worrying about my finances and my business. Fears and worries piled up everywhere I tried to turn for relief.

One of the biggest problems in an all consuming “event” of this kind is to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. The facts are the facts, dwelling on them or wallowing in them accomplishes nothing. When every where we turn; radio, tv, and every phone call seems to bring more bad news, sometimes the best thing to do is to stop the madness.

Turn it all off.

A by product of these world wide “situations” is a certain amount of cultural hypnosis. Everywhere we turn we see situations that reinforce our fears. We get swept up in conversations and debates about “the situation”. When what we need to do is stop. Every contribution we make to “the crisis” in thought, word and deed feeds the beast. Therefore anything we do to break the spell, to get out of the mind set, helps. Every person who moves on to think of and talk about other things diminishes the “power” of crisis fever. Every mind that can be free of fear and anxiety reduces the total amount of fear and anxiety in the atmosphere.

Turning off the news to gain some equilibrium is the equivalent of getting in out of the rain. In fact, psychologists have noted that taking an observer’s stance helps us manage the torrent of emotions we’re exposed to. Step back, shift focus; look at the situation as if it’s a movie plot. Create a metaphor that captures the essence of what you are experiencing. The very act of stepping back to evaluate helps us detach from our anxiety.

And, of course the best way to get beyond “crisis mode” is to look around find ways to help someone who’s less securely situated than you.

We create our reality. We can choose to point our communal ship in a different direction. We don’t have to keep heading for the iceberg.
