How do I know when I am successful?
By Michelle Nedelec of Awareness Strategies
According to Webster, success is the accomplishment of an aim. Does that
mean that the person sleeping on a park bench who manages to bum a cigarette
is successful? If you say “no”, then how do we know when we are successful?
Do we have to make $10,000 a month? Is that enough? Do we need to live in a
million dollar home? What if we do but our marriage is failing? Obviously
that definition is not sufficient.
If we work with Earl Nightingale’s definition of success; “The progressive
realization of a worthy ideal”, then we would agree that success is a higher
accomplishment than simply an aim. It must be a worthy enough aim for us to
trade our lives for. Look at this definition closely and understand not only
what success is, but how easy it is to make a decision to become successful.
Progressive - Forward or onward movement towards a
destination. It is not the destination; it is the persistence, the drive and
the journey. Accomplishing small goals each day, and always move in the same
direction.
Realization - To make plans, dreams, ideas happen in reality.
The dream must be put into action. No matter how slowly or awkwardly, it
must move from the idea to the reality.
Worthy - Deserving. Most people when they set a goal ask
themselves, “Can I really do this?” A more appropriate question would be,
“Is this goal worthy of me?”, “If this takes a life time to accomplish, is
it worth it? Does this goal deserve the exchange of my life for it?” You do
exchange your life each day, working eight hours or more. Are you exchanging
your time to achieve something worthy of this sacrifice?
Ideal - An idea that you fall in love with. Are you in love
with your goal? Are you focused on the solutions? We know problems will
arise, and you knew that when you set the goal. But, if we look at the
definition of love as resonating with another then we can begin to see that
falling in love with an idea means thinking thoughts that are in harmony
with creating that idea.
How do you know when you are successful? That’s easy. It is when you have a
worthy ideal that you are progressively realizing. The question now is,
“What is your Worthy Ideal?”
