What is the most important aspect to launching a web site?
By Tanis Arcuri or Arvic
With the popularity of the Internet and such community sites as MySpace and
YouTube, more businesses and individuals are feeling the pull to get online.
Aside from the international marketing potential of a web site, I feel the
single most important piece of your web presence “puzzle” is your “Domain
Name”.
A domain name is your business or personal name used to identify you online,
for example, risingwomen.com or tanisarcuri.ca. The right domain name is
your key element to initializing plans for your web site.
Getting your ideal domain name registered as soon as possible is the only
way to ensure its future use for your business or personal web site. Why?
Just because your ideal domain name is “available” for registration today,
does not mean it will be tomorrow. So, research a Domain Name Registrar, and
get it registered...ASAP.
Your domain name will be the single most important marketing tool you will
have. If your domain name reflects your personal name, business name,
products or services, then it will be remembered. You can always update and
change the content and look of your web site; however changing your domain
name, which is included on every email, brochure and promotional material
you send out in the business world, is significantly harder.
Domain name registrations also protect your name rights online. There have
been high-profile domain name registrations cases where a trademark was
registered as a domain name by someone other than the owner of that
registered trademark. The same situation has applied to celebrity names as
well, such as juliaroberts.com and hillaryclinton.com
I frequently suggest registering a .Ca domain name extension. It is easier
to find your ideal domain name in the .Ca extension as opposed to a .Com.
.Com extensions can be registered by anyone in the world, while individual
Canadians or Canadian businesses can only register .Ca extensions. You will
not experience management issues if you use a knowledgeable .Ca Registrar.
Now that you have your domain name registered, you can spend as much time as
you need sourcing web hosting, web design companies and creating content.
Once you’ve got the domain name, everything else is just “gravy”.
