RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I’m curious about permanent hair removal. What options are there?

Since as early as the 1800’s, a wide range of viable products and techniques have been introduced offering satisfactory solutions. These options still don’t necessarily guarantee permanent results and the effectiveness of the different methods vary, as do the potential side effects, discomforts, time and cost. When in the market for hair removal, it is important to look into a few different options to decide which methods best suit you. Here are a few options:

- Electrolysis - The oldest method of permanent hair removal is needle electrolysis. This procedure basically entails passing direct current through a needle that is inserted into the hair follicle. Electrolysis sets off a chemical reaction that changes salt water in the skin tissue around the hair follicle into sodium hydroxide, in turn destroying the hair root.

- Thermolysis - This method transmits a high-frequency radio wave through the needle causing intense vibration and heat to destroy the hair root. This can be a painful procedure and complications such as irritation, scarring and infection sometimes follow.

- Transdermal Electrolysis - Based on the same principle as needle electrolysis, transdermal electrolysis was developed to overcome the problems associated with the needle technique. With this method, a gel is first used to coat the area. It is absorbed into the hair, creating excellent conductors for the electronic current. Unlike needle electrolysis, a cotton-tipped probe is used to apply the current. This method is noninvasive and reactions are less common because no needles are being inserted into the skin.

- Lasers - Lasers are the most recently introduced technique for hair removal. By directing a narrow beam of light to a certain depth beneath the skin, Lasers destroy the follicle area with intense heat. Lasers work by keying on darkly coloured chromophore in the hair; not so ideal for very light hair. Usually depending on the skin type and area being treated, Laser can be a fairly quick procedure with little side-effect, however, it is can be costly and again, it is only a permanent reduction method of hair removal.

Techniques termed “permanent” hair removal procedures, again, do not necessarily guarantee complete riddance of hair but have proven to permanently reduce complete areas over time with scheduled repeat visits.
