RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I would like to make my small, wooden deck an inviting space. What can I do besides the traditional outdoor table, chairs and potted plants?

The first thing to do is determine what activities you like to do on your deck. Even a small deck can be a intimate gathering space where you could enjoy family and friends for a morning coffee, a Sunday afternoon in the sun or an evening sipping wine while barbecuing.

Imagine your space as a comfortable living room, only outdoors. Outdoor furniture today is available in many unique styles including oversized lounge chairs, sectional seating, even bar units inclusive of swivel bar stools. Wicker is a wonderful choice and again there are many styles available that are weather-resistant. Another durable product to watch for is furniture made from cast aluminum. This product lasts forever and can be re-finished with outdoor paints and sprays.

When it comes to your cushions and table cloths, invest in quality - and make sure the cushion covers can be easily removed so they can be washed. Most outdoor furnishing today offers a wonderful selection of color choices and even if the style you like only comes in subtle colors, you can add pizzaz by accessorizing with a collection of bright throw pillows, throws and draping. This is also a great option for updating your existing furniture.

Storage is a must for small decks. Available at all home outfitters, outdoor storage units come in many shapes and sizes. The only downfall is that most are designed for utility storage and they don’t come in very exciting colors. To jazz them up, they can be draped with matching fabrics or try decaling them with paint.

Now on to your deck floor. Refinishing with porch and floor paint will instantly give your space unique character. There are a range of prep products, primers and paint colors to choose from. Rugs made of highly durable polypropylene or woven plastic are another option.

For privacy, consider bamboo screens or, for covered decks, hang sheer panels from the overhang. This adds an exotic flair and is a very refreshing look.

For the finishing touch, get creative and accessorize with unique glass vases, sun dials, ceramic pots - which are now available in amazing styles such as cast iron urns or in themes reflective of authentic Mexico or Greece. Finally, lavish your space with a beautiful selection of live flowers.
