RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

My energy levels are always low, even though I get eight hours of sleep. How can I help this?

Fatigue can be a normal and important response to physical exertion, emotional stress, boredom, or lack of sleep. It can also be a nonspecific sign of a more serious psychological or physical disorder. When fatigue is not relieved by enough sleep, good nutrition, or a low-stress environment, it should be addressed through your doctor.

If you are taking any medications, you may want to check their side effects list. Certain medications may cause low energy and fatigue such as antidepressants, antihistamines, high blood pressure medications and diuretics, sedatives, steroids and anti-anxiety medications. If you have ruled out any serious conditions by consulting with your doctor, then there are several things that you can do on your own. Being pro-active with your health can reap many benefits.

Poor nutrition can be a major contributor to low energy. Eating junk food or nutritionally void foods such as sugars, fatty foods, excess carbohydrates or caffeinated beverages, can also be a cause of low energy.

Many people may be surprised to know that stress is also one of the leading causes of low energy. In addition to interfering with sleeping patterns, prolonged stress leaves the body in a perpetual state of anxiety. Over time, this stress can lead to symptoms such as headaches, decreased immunity and a general lack of energy. People experiencing too much stress on a day-to-day basis should focus on finding ways to relieve stress while boosting energy levels. Some of these techniques might include meditation and exercise, which can make people feel less anxious and more energetic. Hypnosis can help you to establish new routines, BodyTalk can help create energetic balancing, Psych-K can help facilitate belief changes about healthy lifestyle changes, and nutritional analysis can pinpoint any nutrient deficiencies.

To help reduce fatigue, get adequate and consistent amounts of sleep each night, eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water throughout the day. It is encouraged that you also exercise regularly, learn ways to relax, maintain a reasonable work schedule, change or eliminate your stressful circumstances, deal directly with problems in a relationship, and avoid alcohol, nicotine and drug use.

By working to develop good sleep habits, make healthy food choices, improving healthy lifestyle routines and reducing daily stress, you can enjoy a renewed vigor for life.
