RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
I read about
lymphatic drainage in a prior edition of Rising Women. Can this really help
me lose weight?
Yes, lymphatic drainage can definitely help you lose weight!
When the lymph system becomes sluggish (blocked), a toxic environment is
created which will influence all the cells of the body. Toxins that would
normally be filtered out are now off-loaded into other organs. As a result,
many adverse health conditions can follow, including weight gain.
The lymphatic system is your drainage system. This is why techniques such as
lymphatic massage, for instance, are sometimes also known as lymphatic
drainage. Think of your lymphatic system as your body’s metabolic waste
disposal system getting rid of dead cells and other wastes. Some people have
very sluggish lymphatic systems, and this causes them to have a sluggish
metabolism. Their weight loss will maintain a very slow progress, so
naturally lymphatic drainage techniques can be very helpful for those who
are overweight and those who have a sluggish metabolism because lymphatic
drainage increases the flow and volume of lymph fluid.
Lymphatic drainage techniques, particularly massage, can be very beneficial
for those with cellulite as it helps your lymphatic drainage system remove
toxins and wastes from the body. This in turn reduces cellulite (dimples in
skin) in areas such as buttocks and thighs. Hands-on massage helps to
strengthen blood vessels and increase the blood flow and circulation which
helps the body to break down toxins away from body tissues, aiding in weight
loss and fluid retention.
Your lymphatic system’s job is to flush all your toxins away, and keep you
healthy. Lymphatic drainage massage is best in a heated room; warmth is an
important factor in increasing lymphatic flow. You are also likely to be
more relaxed if you are not cold. Your therapist will probably work her way
up from your feet. The main lymph nodes are in the groin, armpits and neck.
Hot Tip: Lymphatic drainage is about flushing out your system; you can do
this every day by drinking plenty of water and staying active. One of the
best things you can do for your lymphatic system is to be more active. Even
the most gentle activity will help encourage a healthy lymph flow, as
movement of the muscles exerts pressure on the lymphatic vessels and keeps
them moving.
