RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

I’m on a limited budget but want to take control of marketing my business. What methods are effective?

Businesses big and small are feeling the effects of cash strapped consumers refusing to part with their wallets. The good news is, even on a limited budget you can get creative with how you promote your products and services through do-it-yourself public relations. Public relations is an effective tool for promoting your business through the media absolutely FREE. If you have the time, the patience and nifty writing skills up your sleeve the following tips can help you generate free publicity without spending a dime.

1) Write an exciting press release about your company that you can use as a marketing tool to both the media and your customers. You can add it as a component of your monthly newsletter or distribute it on a newswire service that will reach publications that may be interested in your story. To increase your chances of being featured in a publication, write a compelling press release that is newsworthy, grabs the reader’s attention and ultimately provides relevant information to the audience you are trying to reach.

2) Find popular blogs relevant to your industry that have a strong following with interactive visitors that regularly read the blog and leave comments. Get in touch with the blog owner and ask for an opportunity to write a guest post discussing your product or service. Many bloggers will also accept product submissions and review your product on their blog. Your overall goal is to generate online buzz and increase your Google rankings.

3) Take inventory of magazines that are relevant to your business. Contact the magazine and ask for the appropriate person to send your press release to. You can even visit the website of the magazine and find their editorial calendar which will tell you which topics they plan to cover in upcoming issues.

4) If you’re pressed for time, set out weekly goals with a combination of all the above strategies. Track your results by creating a plan to monitor your success.

You have to be dedicated and patient when conducting do-it-yourself public relations. Don’t expect a ton of results with just one placement. Promotion is about consistency and visibility. When people can remember who you are and what you do, that is when you will begin to see your hard work pay off.
