RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

Why do I get a headache after consuming an electrolyte drink or hot beverage?

Headaches or other various symptoms such as seizures, fatigue, tingles and swelling in the extremities, hives, cramps, and behavioural issues may be related to the ingestion of food additives and preservatives. These are substances or mixtures of substances other than basic foodstuffs that are present in food itself to enhance color, flavour and shelf life. Some of the most common found additives/preservatives are: MSG, EDTA, BHT/BHA, Aspartame, Sodium Benzoates Sulfites/ Sulfates, Nitrites/Nitrates, Red Dye #2 & 3 and Yellow Dye # 5 (tartrazene).

These additives and preservatives have a direct impact on our brain and are called “excitotoxins”. Excitotoxins effect the nervous system by crossing the blood brain barrier causing neurons to swell and die within minutes resulting in headaches and other symptoms mentioned. MSG for example, targets the hypothalamus, as the glutamic like compounds harm the proper functioning’s of sleep-wake cycles, hunger/satiety, hormone regulation, and emotional states with increased anger or aggression. The glutamate effects the neurological development of the hypothalamus, altering the way the cells and pathways develop, changing the brain. Frequently used names for MSG or substances rich in monosodium glutamate are Yeast Extract, Gelatin, natural flavourings, Textured Protein, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), Annato or Maltodextrin.

Aspartame is another biggy composed of Aspartic acid, Phenylalnine and Methanol. This chemical is used in many diet sodas, artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet, gum, etc. Aspartame can damage the nervous system and brain creating epileptic-like seizures, insomnia and depression.

Makes you wonder how much you are consuming or giving your children! Special consideration when shopping is required for kids with ADD/ADHD, learning disorders, and individuals suffering from Parkinsons or Alzheimer’s should avoid these excitotoxins. Expectant mothers or those wishing to conceive need to eliminate it from their diet as it will effect hormones and the developing fetus.

Read the label! Avoid the product if you cannot pronounce the list of ingredients or if it has any of the listed additives or preservatives mentioned. And the next time you crave your favourite coffee loaded with whip cream or the brightly colored, electric blue sport drink, consider your brain.
