RISING WOMEN EXPERTS...
As I see people being laid off. What can I do to keep my job?
By Jeanne Moreau Couzens of Horizon Resources
For many years I’ve worked with employees and employers, helping them
find the perfect fit. Know that by doing your very best consistently, you’ll
be the last one to go and the first one your company re-hires. Here are 15
suggestions to help you be a valuable asset to your company:
- Be a team player. Work well within a group by helping others and being
positive and up-beat.
- Don’t get into power struggles. Leave your ego at home and try to create a
harmonious and friendly work environment.
- Never get involved in office politics, gossip circles and office feuds.
Stay above these as they will only drag you down.
- Be professional in your demeanor and dress. Dress well in “business
casual” clothes that are clean, comfortable and fit you well.
- Don’t be high maintenance. Work is not the place to bring your problems.
Conversely be sympathetic if someone has a mishap.
- Don’t whine, complain and create cliques. Be mature, include all others
and always watch what you say, as it can come back to haunt you.
- Don’t use the office for your personal needs. Resist the urge to email,
make calls, text, twitter and facebook.
- Be punctual, reliable and dependable. This is a must. Being on and off
again will stress your whole team, as they will have to cover for you.
- Be a hard worker. Give work your best when you are there. Remember that
you may not always love every minute of your work, but that you are being
remunerated. - Take responsibility for any oversight, mistake or error that
you created. Never point fingers and blame others. Do damage control and
move on.
- Always be honest, kind, fair, considerate, friendly, helpful and
respectful in all your interactions with others. Nix all prejudices.
- Be neat, organized and efficient. Look for ways to streamline and optimize
your productivity.
- Keep learning, growing and looking for ways to improve your skills and
knowledge base.
- Volunteer, share your knowledge and good ideas, and always go the extra
mile.
- Be creative, resourceful, friendly and outgoing.
