Your
Inner Resistance - Resistance in Life and Its Affects
By Corinne Cornish of The Inner Realm
How do you know what you resist? It took me years to understand, become
aware of and be able to connect with my inner resistance. It most noticeably
came one day when I FELT an irritability and annoyance surface in my body
while washing the dishes; a chore that I had convinced myself I didn’t
enjoy. When I realized this, I started to connect this same feeling with
other activities that elicited the same reaction.
It seems easier for the mind to accept and even support resistance when
circumstances arise that we dislike. A long overdue fridge cleaning may
continue to linger and can often lead to procrastination. These thoughts get
stored in the back of our minds and the longer they accumulate, the heavier
they get. The impact of heavy thoughts and unexpressed emotions manifest on
all levels of our bodies and create energetic imbalances such as physical
dis-ease, emotional blocks, mental confusion and spiritual disconnection. We
are now waking up to these unconscious feelings of heaviness that were once
felt as “normal” and becoming aware that this is not a preferred state of
“Life”. What is even more curious is when we resist activates that we love
to do.
The core nature of “Life” exists as a harmonious unfoldment of energy with
its source being “Love”. However, our minds have wandered away from this
truth by resisting and denying ourselves our natural state. We have “lost
sight” of who we are. As a result of past experiences, we have believed that
we are less than “Love” and this has created a disconnection or separation
from our core “Self”. Overtime we started to identify with this belief in
“lack-of-love” (ego state). Its existence is dependant on the energies of
limitation, stress, lack of presence, control, fear, etc. So with the
continued attention and identification of these limiting believes we have as
a consequence become attached to it. It has now been integrated as a
“normal” aspect of our being.
Inner resistance is typically not registered by the conscious mind until the
body indicates a level of stress, and at times quite dramatically, that
something FEELS out of balance. It is painful to be separated from our core
essence and this is the exact energy that the separated “Self” thrives on.
Any movement towards an infinite, peaceful or unified state is a threat and
this is what creates the feelings of negative resistance in “Life”. Of
course, we can feel resistance if our core “Self” is suggesting that
something may not be in our highest good. This intuitive ability however
only begins to become clear when we have started to refocus our attention
back to the “Source” of who we are and accept our “Self”.
It is very common to encounter resistance with another person and you may
even say that you were triggered by them. This is your lack of “Self”
recognizing the other person’s lack of “Self”, and it’s being mirrored back.
Like energy attracts like energy. These accumulating unresolved feelings are
triggered and released within your body. Isn’t it interesting that some
people are affected by others while some aren’t?
The FULL expression of who we are cannot be completely realized if there are
still aspects of us that resist our full power. By default we then deny
ourselves “Love” and don’t fully accept what our heart is asking of us, even
if it is doing laundry. Whether enjoyable or not, resistance to “Life”
itself is resisting that we “ARE the flow of Life”. When we begin accepting
our core essence of “Love”, we then become aware of the harmonious presence
of “Life” that is continual motion.
The roots of resisting wholeness are typically buried deep within, perhaps
not on the surface of the conscious mind, but within the old repetitive
programs that “silently” play. When these limiting, dysfunctional beliefs
are not addressed, they continue to repeat throughout one’s life and even
lifetimes. With inner awareness, these repeating energy patterns are
revealed and their strength dissolves. These are wonderful opportunities for
you to become “aware of”, and one of the most empowering gifts you can give
yourself. This is when “Life” begins to reveal itself as a culmination of
energetic experiences that are magically woven together!
Identifying Resistance - Personal Practice:
1) Open communication with your body. Acknowledge that your body, not your
mind, provides you with sensations that indicate your level of
comfortability (connection with your Self) or uncomfortability (lack of
connection with your Self).
2) Become familiar and observe all sensations within your body when you are
comfortable (happy, joyful, confident, etc.) as well as uncomfortable
(anxious, frustrated, tense, etc.) What areas of your body are associated
with these sensations?
3) Become aware of what resistance feels like within your body. Allow
yourself to be honest and open when this sensation arises. What does it feel
like?
4) Observe and feel the resistance with acceptance. Being present, and by
giving the resistance attention, allows it to lose its strength.
5) Further insight - observe the emotion behind the resistance. With deeper
reflection, connect with similar feelings of resistance and see if you find
similar emotions. This links them together. For example:
“This feeling is the same with ___ , ___ and ___. In all of these situations
I realize that _____...”
“I am aware that I procrastinate about ___, ___ and ___. In all of these
situations I can now see ___.”
6) “Walk through” your resistance and empower yourself. How does your body
feel AFTER you...? Becoming aware, and understanding and walking through
resistance is a very powerful experience.
7) Accept each moment as the perfect unfoldment of Life.
