My eyes are always puffy. What can I do to fix this?

The causes for puffy eyes are quite common. Some may include fluctuation in hormonal stability, allergies or allergic reaction, poor sleep habits or a diet high in salt or alcoholic beverages. Whatever the reason, this very common and simple problem has some very common and simple solutions. However, since the cause for you specifically may be from any number of reasons, you will have to do some experimentation to rid the puff.

The initial four things I suggest is to first eliminate coffee, soft drinks and juices; drink only water and lots of it. Secondly, watch your salt intake. Third, supplement with natural diuretic herbs such as dandelion, celery seed or solidago. And finally, get more rest.

If the puffiness persists, the next step is to examine your skincare choices. To start, I would stay away from using eye creams or gels. Instead, try using cold compresses such as ice cold water or ice cubes, or even ice cold milk. The best way to apply cold water or milk is to use cotton balls. Apply by squeezing out nearly all the liquid before putting the balls over your eye area. Compress for about 10 to 15 minutes per day. If using ice cubes, use for only a minute or two. The cold helps constrict blood vessels that cause thin skin around the eyes to plump.

If you just “must” use your eye creams or masks, I first suggest that you do some research to find products that are natural or organic. Look for one’s that are created from specific botanicals or herbs that help puffiness - rose oil is a good example. Next, make sure you refrigerate them before applying. Not only will you get better results, your face will also have a wonderful, rejuvenating experience.

Another luxurious application that works wonders is the use of fruits and vegetables such as strawberry, apple, cucumber and potato slices. Organic varieties are a better choice because they have no chemicals. This home remedy is amazing at reducing swelling and discolouration. Fruits and vegetables each have their own variety of nutrients which can ultimately feed the eyelid and under eye area. Cooled tea bags have the same effect with the added benefit of tannin, an astringent that helps make skin more taut.

A final suggestion is to double up on your bedding pillows to keep your head elevated. This prevents fluid from collecting under your eyes. When puffy eyes are left unchecked, damage to the blood vessels is possible, which unfortunately can not be remedied.
