OUR EXPERTS...
If setting goals doesn’t make them happen, then what makes them
happen?
By Michelle Nedelec of Awareness Strategies
The logical answer would be, “doing them makes them happen,” but what
about the part in between the setting and achieving of goals?
The first thing to accept is that this goal achieving “thing” is much more
complicated than we give it credit. Year long courses have been developed to
fully understand the process and though this column alone is not going to
cover the complete process, it is a place to start.
The first step to achieving goals consistently is definitely to write them
down. This creates clarity. We cannot stop there though. If your desire and
determination is strong then you will persevere until you accomplish your
goal. If, however, your desire and determination are not at their strongest,
then we need to create it. By writing down why you want your goal, or more
importantly how you will feel when you have realized your goal, then you can
use that as a reminder when things seem to wane.
It is at that moment that you need to remind yourself that things are not
always as they appear and you may be much closer to your goal than you
realize, and continue to encourage yourself. Reinforcing those end-feelings
will help to give you the added incentive that you need to carry you
through. This is the stage when looking at your beliefs maybe the most
important component to achieving the goal. If you are willing to do some
introspection here and contradict your limiting beliefs you will be doing
the most courageous act anyone could ever ask of you.
This is where true character building happens. By focusing on what you want
and who you want to become, you will find solutions to all of your stumbling
blocks, deterrents and mistakes. You will then have far more valuable
information to carry you further ahead than you would if it all went
smoothly. Whatever the goal is, it is not all that important in the long
run. Who you become by accomplishing the goal, now that, is extremely
important. When your thoughts, feelings and actions are all in alignment
that is when things really begin to happen. Set the goal and know that you
can make it happen. That is what makes goals happen!
