I’m starting a new job and need a professional look. How can I update my wardrobe without spending loads of money?

Planning and forethought are needed to create a great professional look. Everyday you are being judged by your appearance at work so you want to create a look that projects confidence and professionalism with just a dash of your unique, personal style. Your personal style is your trademark and people will remember you for it. Choose 3-5 words that describe how you want to be perceived; such as “fun, creative, professional”. This will give you style direction and create consistency.

Create a basic wardrobe by investing in a few well-made, quality items that are timeless and immune to changes in fashion. Use neutral shades for your basic wardrobe and layer on a little colour and jewellery to personalize it. Learn how to create variety out of a few garments by choosing clothing styles that have maximum versatility; ones that can move you from day into evening just by adding different accessories.

Colour makes the initial impact, so choose carefully! Colour can brighten your eyes, reduce under eye circles and make your skin look radiant. If your skin tone is warm, your basics should be in cream, ivory and brown with gold accessories. If your skin tone is cool use black, grey, navy and white with silver accessories. Experiment by holding these and other colours up to your face.

Appraise your body proportions and make sure every piece is tailored to fit your shape allowing some give and movement. Horizontal lines create an illusion of width while vertical lines create an illusion of height. Try to balance your body proportions; you want to play up your best features while playing down those not so great.

Put thought into everything you buy. Do not buy on impulse and don’t spend a lot of money on trendy items, bright colors and bold prints - they date too quickly. Narrow down the options that work with your shape, coloring, personality and lifestyle.

When you change your outward appearance, it provokes an inner transformation. You will stand taller, talk with more conviction and act more bold. Fashion is a great tool for getting ahead in business and once you define your style and learn how to express it with confidence, it will show through in every aspect of your life.
