ASK OUR EXPERTS...

I am just starting my business and I have little extra cash. How do I promote myself and new business?
    By Natashia Halikowski of Intuitionworks

To be a shameless, self-promoter without being too aggressive is not as challenging as you might think. Keep in mind this key point. You, your service or your products are a solution to someone else’s problem. When you share with others how you can solve problems, your self- promotion efforts are actually viewed in a brand new light and people will enjoy your message. After all, we all like to help someone with their challenges, issues and problems. As a problem solver, any objection becomes an opportunity to demonstrate that you understand what their concerns are and you are there to help.

The best way to begin self-promoting is as follows: First prepare yourself. Ask yourself the following questions: “Am I ready?” “Is my energy great?” “Can I give my full attention to the people I am connecting with? When you are positive and enthusiastic, people naturally are attracted to you and will be more ready to listen and remember what you are sharing.

Second, craft your engaging story in advance and remember to highlight the value and solutions that you or your products can provide. If your story is truly engaging people will get excited about your story and they will be willing to either help you or become a client. Everyone loves to share a good story. Promotion is all about having others share with others what we do.

Next, know what you are looking for when you are promoting yourself and your business. Just as we want to be helpful, so do others. It is important that we clearly share what we are seeking, make it easy for people to refer others to us or offer ideas or even purchase our products. To this end you might ask a friend for feedback: “Do I communicate clearly, could my message be clearer and is it easy to see what I need?”

Lastly, shameless self-promotion is all about building great relationships. You must give people a reason to like you, a reason to trust you and a reason to refer others to you. People will only connect with you if they feel that you listen to them, you understand their circumstances, that you are generous, caring and are open to feedback. Remember, we educate others as to how we, or our business, should be treated.
