RISING WOMEN EXPERT
ADVICE...
I’ve heard that there are a lot of environmental hazards present in
the average kitchen wares. What are these and what can I do about them?
Your question was definitely an alarming “Did ya know...” factor when we
looked into the health risk of kitchen wares further!
Did Ya Know...that aluminum pots and pans actually contaminate
food with aluminum. Salty and acid foods actually pit the surface of the
metal making it reactive. Aluminum contamination has been linked to
Alzheimer’s disease.
Did Ya Know...that Teflon-Coated cookware may kill you too?
According to studies conducted by the Environmental Working Group,
overheated non-stick pans emit a toxic mixture of chemicals linked to
cancer, birth defects, immune system suppression, heart attacks and stroke.
The chemical used in Teflon products is a fluorine compound. It is also used
in other water-and stain-repellent coatings on oven, carpets and clothing.
Glass cookware is by far the safest for pots and oven proof dishes. As for
frying, there is still much debate however cast iron and titanium are noted
as being exceptionally safe. Titanium is non-porous eliminating any alloys
or metals used in the manufacturing process from contaminating the food.
Did Ya Know...that plastic containers and utensils break down
with age. This process is accelerated with use of heat and harsh detergents.
Plastic products (polycarbonate) are made with a chemical ingredient called
Bisphenol A. Countless studies prove that Bisphenol upsets natural hormone
levels and causes genetic damage and miscarriages in lab mice. Your best
option is to use stainless steel or wooden utensils and glass containers.
With purchased products such as cheese or meat, remove from plastic
packaging and wrap in freezer paper or wax paper and then store in your
glass containers. If you can’t get away from using your plastics, wrap your
food with these papers before sealing in your plastic containers; works just
as well.
Did Ya Know...that metal containers are not much better.
Acidic foods such as tomatoes, sauerkraut, fruit, lemonade, tea and wine can
react with the metal in containers and become poisonous. Zinc is found in
galvanized metal containers. Copper and brass containers actually turn
acidic food toxic within seconds and traditional pewter containers contain
25 percent lead and 75 percent tin. Even for your serving dishes it is
recommended that you use glassware.
