How do I get off the roller coaster of weight gain, dieting and
emotional eating?
By Jan Mitchell of Expanding Minds
At first glance, the concept seems simple: eat less and do more. But
that strategy doesn’t work for everyone. Neuro Science has proven that
weight issues are complicated by your emotions and beliefs. Your unconscious
mind creates 90 percent of your experience. Your emotions and beliefs (and
behaviours) are controlled by your unconscious mind. Your unconscious
doesn’t know if what you think is real or imagined (worry); good for you or
not. It just accepts what you think as true and acts on it. If you think,
“I’m too fat”, your unconscious creates results of “being too fat!”
Imagine your unconscious is like a computer with many “programs” running.
Some work well, others cause problems. Like a computer, these “problem
programs” can be updated so you get the results you want. What “problem
programs” do you need to update? Write down what is working for you, what
isn’t and what you need to change, in these areas: (a) environment(s), home,
work; (b) your behaviours; (c) what capabilities or skills you need; (d)
your beliefs and values that stop you; (e) your identity, would you need to
change who you are to be slim?
What “programs” keep you stuck about: (a) your body image, habits, yourself,
fears; (b) do you get stuck in your feelings; eat when stressed, bored or
lonely; (c) is it unsafe to be slim or attractive; (d) not knowing when your
body feels comfortably full; (f) eating unhealthy foods.
Third, write down your common reasons why it’s hard for you to change: (a)
you may be unclear specifically what you want; (b) you don’t know “how to
change”; (c) part of you wants to change and part doesn’t; (d) you need to
learn new skills or behaviours; (e) you need to change your unconscious
beliefs; (f) you need time to change.
Neuro Science tells us that changing your unconscious mind helps you become
more congruent and it’s easier for you to achieve your goals. Change is
tough to go it alone, so find support that fits your unique needs through
books, courses, support groups, trainers, a healthy weight loss plan or
counsellor. You may require several types of support as many weight loss
plans, for example, just talk about the unconscious changes. Find help to
quickly change at the unconscious level so you: automatically update
limiting beliefs and behaviours; integrate naturally slim eating behaviours;
build healthy food preferences and integrate strategies to handle emotional
hunger.
