RISING WOMEN EXPERT ADVICE...

Why do I get electrical-like shocks throughout my body when I am trying to fall asleep?

What you have is most likely anxiety. This is just one of the many symptoms that anxiety carries. The sensation is like having electrical shocks (which vary in degree from individual to individual) or a jolting feeling running through the whole body or in isolated areas such as the legs. It can also feel like a sharp stab or vibration. These sensations commonly happen when one is trying to fall asleep but there are cases documented where deeper sleep patterns are interrupted throughout the night.

What causes anxiety? There are a host of reasons and these are individual to the person experiencing it. Science has documented that there are generally three potential “triggers” that cause this type of disorder; these include brain chemistry, heredity and life experiences. Life experiences are a dominating cause as this can include everything from unhealthy diet choices such as drinking excess caffeine to undergoing abuse, violence or sudden loss. Anxiety is particularly common in those who hold in negative feelings such as anger or grief, or have an excessive need for approval; however more and more people are experiencing symptoms purely due to stress and exhaustion. The electric shocks are our body’s way of saying, “Enough is enough, you have to slow down!”

How do you “fix” anxiety? It is often very difficult to pin-point one specific factor that is causing anxiety as this mind/body reaction tends to surface when combinations of triggers present themselves. You may be feeling a bit insecure about starting a new job, stressed about the family reunion taking place in two weeks and subconsciously dealing with pent up anger towards your father that was never resolved. So by this example alone, you can see that “fixing” anxiety can be tricky.

Generally there are two treatment categories; one that focuses on reducing the symptoms and the other addresses the core causes. Reducing the symptoms can include incorporating lifestyle changes such as setting boundaries (i.e: to reduce work-related stress), practicing yoga or meditating, reducing alcohol or caffeine intake. There are even natural and prescription remedies; however no medication or “new regime” can fully resolve anxiety unless you are willing to get to the root issue(s). To truly eliminate anxiety takes a personal commitment to seek out the mind/body connection whether that be through coaching, counselling, therapy or self help. Knowledge is freedom.
